Quick update

I should probably quickly update sometime.

I work at MIT now as a postdoc researcher making OMCS run. I have a one-year appointment. Working at the media lab is very surreal, on a given day you could get asked to be in a goofy video with a robot or to work on Ok Go's next video. The work situation here is kinda stressful for a wide variety of reasons, but I think I'm keeping my head above water. I'll stay at the lab as long as possible.

User Test!

Hello all - we've got a new user test. It would be awesome if some of you took a moment to do it. I honestly need results as soon as possible (measured in hours, not days).

User test

Thanks!

Chicago and Misc.

Not having a great week (surprise!)- too busy to sleep much for starters. Going to Chicago for a week - things look to get better I hope. Lots of good food, theater, and AI.

Put up a new CSC website.

Now off to the first conference of the last year of grad school for me. Am I supposed to do anything differently now that I'm technically about to be on the job market? Hrm.

Research

They made a really awful pun with my research on the MIT ML home page.

But. Yeah. Shiny.

Because you and I are now living the same way...

I would just like to point out that perhaps is the most powerful piece of live music I have seen in quite some time. Possibly ever.

Camcorders?

Ok. ESP is buying a camcorder. Despite all appearances to the contrary, I know nothing about technology. Are they even called camcorders anymore? We want to spend $150-$200. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Cuttlefish!

The New York Times gave me a great birthday present by doing an article on Cuttlefish which are awesome and one of my favorite things in the aquarium downtown.

Professor Spam

Oh god, I've started getting professor spam. I'm a bit shocked such a thing exists. I'm getting offers to publish my book at various small vanity presses, offers for international travel phone plans for specific conferences and other such things.

Teach for Splash

I bet a bunch of you know by now that I teach for Splash - which is a one weekend program where you can teach a class on anything you want to high school and middle
school students in the Boston area. It's a very low time commitment opportunity and is a lot of fun. If you're interested give me an email!

- Catherine

-------------------
Are you interested in things?

Then inflict your interests on high school students by teaching Splash
2007!

Splash is a weekend-long program on November 17-18 where you can teach ANYTHING you want to high school students. Quantum mechanics, speaker building, origami, duct
tape design, tissue engineering...everything is fair game. Your class can be as large or as small as you want and can last anywhere from 1-5 hours. Just register
your class, and you're free to delve into your favorite topics with bright high school students from all over the area.

For more information, go to esp.mit.edu, then register your Splash class BY
OCTOBER 20th at http://esp.mit.edu/teach/Splash/2007/teacherreg/.

Person Search

Hey guys,

Some of you may know an alum named Jesse Cox. The alumni office has no idea where to reach him and we need to find him for IP licensing purposes. If anyone knows where he is can you drop me a line.

Save Internet Radio

I've got a bad idea.

I'm quite angry with the new internet radio royalties that, as it currently stands, will shut down Pandora, LastFM, Live365 and every NPR rebroadcaster ever on July 15th. You can find more information about this at SaveNetRadio.org.

This effects so many of us and I'd really like... well... it not to happen. It's not just about this instance - it is a terrible president to set. This whole issue isn't really being covered and I'd love a way to know how the current presidential candidates feel about the issue and possibly to shed some light on the issue. I've got a lot of video editing knowledge from doing my masters basically attached to an Avid system... so I figured I'd like to make a YouTube debate question asking them about this.

Then I realized that this effects so many people, why does it have to be just me asking the question.

I'm going to pick a date and time and invite *everyone* I know and everyone they know. Make a big publicity drive to get people to show up: Facebook, LJ, and other sources of publicity. Everyone locally who's effected and angry. Have them all stand behind me (maybe in front of the MIT Student Center) while I ask the question. I'm prepared for getting a lot of people. Then make a good professional quality video about the sites that are effected and explain why it's so important.

I am almost certainly doing this. If you'd like to help me organize, please tell me.
