Hello all - we've got a new user test. It would be awesome if some of you took a moment to do it. I honestly need results as soon as possible (measured in hours, not days).

User test

Thanks!

Not having a great week (surprise!)- too busy to sleep much for starters. Going to Chicago for a week - things look to get better I hope. Lots of good food, theater, and AI.

Put up a new CSC website.

Now off to the first conference of the last year of grad school for me. Am I supposed to do anything differently now that I'm technically about to be on the job market? Hrm.

They made a really awful pun with my research on the MIT ML home page.

But. Yeah. Shiny.

I have 6 messages in my inbox. I feel ready for lab to get back in swing. ;P

I've also found that this guy is doing work combining commonsense reasoning, generative lexicon and cognitive grounding. I'm not sure if I should rejoice that work is being done in that area or if that work is too close to what I plan to do for my thesis. I plan on using today to investigate.

I will certainly invite him to the workshop. I'm very interested in meeting him.

Web design

So.

The ESP website is working and is in usability tests. This is good. I can sleep more than five hours a night. In fact, last night I slept 8. I believe J slept 12 after falling asleep typing in a chair. I feel much better, but I'm physically exhausted. My upper body hurts like I've run a marathon with it. Luckily, no RSI for me this time. I was going to stop the moment my wrists started hurting but that moment never came. I've also figured out a way that I can get Brandeis independent study credit for the last two weeks. If I've ever learned anything about interface design at a professional level - this is it. Yesterday I was in an actual human-subject, cameras and everything usability lab where people were testing our code. It's amazing and very enlightening to watch people use the interface you designed. You get very... umm.. involved. Or that just may have been us.

Hmm...

I wonder when I'm sleeping between now and leaving for Italy. Or at least between now and when the posters are due to the printer Thursday night.

I finished BULB!

I'm not quite sure what to say. I'm done. It works. Or at least it seems to. You'll probably find about 10 bugs and more user interface gripes but wow.

I finished BULB.

Zonk.

Django?

My server keeps going down and I don't know why. Every once and a while, the server will just randomly stop running certain programs. For example, once I was coding and I couldn't run emacs - it would just keep seg faulting. Mainly sshd and the django server go down. The main problem with this is it takes me at least 3 hours to go to Brandeis where the server is and restart the damn thing so I can work.

Django is a wonderful platform a lot like rails for python. I can't imagine it's doing this to me... but then what is? I've watched the process happen from the box - it doesn't seem like any system resources are being maxed out when it happens.

Ideas?

We found the best typo in the SIGDIAL paper draft today:

From the LREC site:

Articles must be either 4 or 6 pages in length (not 5 pages please for typesetting reasons)

What?!?

Umm..

I just had an awesome meeting with my adviser. Now I remember why I came to this school. We discussed all the unsolved problems and questions that I was interested in. We talked about why the time has come to move on from Chomsky, though there are lessons from his work which are still useful for the field. We talked about compositionality, typing, primitives, construction, formality and all sorts of other wonderful things. And then out of that conversation came an idea.

Now I have to start doing a literature search. It's a modeling idea - I guess I can't really get away from the fact that I am a modeler. It keeps coming back to haunt me. I'm telling myself not to get too excited. There's a long, hard road to the word that begins with a D.

On a related note, I have to learn a lot of information theory really fast. Any recommendations?
