So this has the makings of an actual update... or two. We'll see how far I get. I'm not particularly hosed. I don't have classes anymore so things are pretty independent of the normal end of term rush. In a week my two closest collaborators will travel to Brno in the Czech republic for the rest of the month (maybe they should take some vowels). Which should make life very interesting, at least time zone wise. I guess now I'm going to get some thesis related research done and take a well-deserved *academic* slow down. And cause all my friends to fail their classes. :) Or at least keep them company while they're tooling.

I've decided to leave the controversial areas of linguistics behind and embark on a project in the area of "Semantic Primitives" (for the vast majority of you who would otherwise have no idea, that's very sarcastic). A good intro can be found at Language Hat. I'm not taking sides on the problem much - I'm just the modeler. Yet again. :) I'm going to start doing a lit search for how to make a information theoretic model of how the number of starting primitives effects the growth of a (generative) lexicon. This may remind people of an old research project of mine called System of Centers or of Simon Kirby's work. That's not at all accidental. It's interesting that what goes around comes around. It seems to be that season recently. I can finally see myself as a professor somewhere... the problem is I can also see myself as so many other things lately.

Although I did formally come out of the closet as anti-chomskyian at a large meeting sometime right before Splash. Yay for lack of sleep giving you the courage to do something you should have done long ago.

In the grand tradition of graduate students blogging about their work, a bunch of GL graduate student (and my adviser) are planning on starting a research related blog. It's currently called typeshift and it hasn't really launched yet. I'll keep you guys updated, but I can think of only about five people on this LJ who'd be interested in reading.

When I finished with Utopia, I decided to take a break from theater until I stopped limping. That day had long come and gone but I still hadn't come out of retirement. I did the occasional small thing (Yeomen and JCS) and directed a one-act at Brandeis but I was pretty much out of the loop. Then [livejournal.com profile] veryhappykayla wrote a play and/or I went to ice cream with [livejournal.com profile] fclbrokle. And you all know the rest. So I'm officially back. Except that I don't like anyone's spring show. Hmm... make my own? (No! Bad cmouse).

Speaking of out of retirement - I've gotten sucked into ESP and back into the wondrous world of the student center's fourth floor. I'm really psyched about ESP. We'll see where this all goes...
